A Trip Through The Last 170 Years
In the past 170 years Palmers have experienced many remarkable incidents, here are just a few:
- 1880: Arthur Patterson the Yarmouth naturalist worked in Palmers warehouse and used hosiery wrappings from the floor to constitute his early natural history books
- 1892: Palmers in Great Yarmouth was destroyed by a fire and subsequently rebuilt
- 1895: Young ladies who worked for us lived in the dormitories above the shop
- 1908: The first Palmers' Apprenticeship Scheme was introduced enabling the training of young employees in various aspects of the retail trade; this scheme still exists today
- 1922: Palmers first made batons for Sir Henry Wood the famous conductor who founded the Promenade Concerts
- 1941: The Great Yarmouth store suffered bomb damage during wartime air raids
- 1961: Palmers took over Plumptons in Bury St Edmunds and turned it into a fashion store
- A pinnacle on St Nicholas Church was named after Palmers ('Palmers Pinnacle') following a donation to the Church Restoration Fund
- 1987: Princess Alexandra visited Palmers during the Great Yarmouth store's 150th Anniversary
- 1989: Palmers purchased a new department store in Dereham; previously named Nicholas Hinde & Son
- 1989: Palmers opened a second store in Bury St Edmunds specifically for homeware
- 1997: a tightrope walker crossed the Great Yarmouth Market Place from Palmers Dome
- 2000: Palmers was awarded an architectural prize for it's refurbishment of the ornate nineteenth century skylight on the first floor of the store
- 2004: Palmers took over Chadds Department Store in Lowestoft
- 2007: Caprice visited Palmers Stores to celebrate the 170 year anniversary
- 2009: Palmers launched two new websites: www.thelinendepartment.co.uk and www.thebathtimedepartment.co.uk
