About Palmers
In June 1837, Garwood Burton Palmer and his brother opened a small drapery shop in Great Yarmouth Market Place. Over 170 years later, Palmers is still an independent family business, but now that small shop is a full-line department store and there are four other branches. It is one of the largest independent retail companies in East Anglia employing over 400 staff.
Palmers have traded through the reign of seven monarchs; worked under seven chairmen; acquired five stores; survived two major fires and bomb damage and consequently the Great Yarmouth store now boasts the title of longest established independent department store in the country.
